The Simple Swap Challenge: 5 Easy Eco-Friendly Switches You Can Make Today

The Simple Swap Challenge: 5 Easy Eco-Friendly Switches You Can Make Today

Living more sustainably doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. In fact, some of the most impactful changes come from small, simple swaps that fit easily into everyday life. That’s why I thought up the The Simple Swap Challenge - a fun, easy way to make more eco-friendly choices without feeling overwhelmed.

The idea is simple: pick one (or more!) of the five swaps below and challenge yourself to stick with it. Whether you’re just getting started or looking for new ways to reduce waste, these swaps are affordable, practical, and designed to make a real difference over time. A lot of sustainable living is all about building long-lasting habits and routines.

1. Swap disposable drinks for reusable options

One of the easiest and most effective swaps is ditching single-use plastic bottles and disposable coffee cups in favour of reusable alternatives. Not only does this cut down on plastic waste, but it also saves money in the long run. Keep a water bottle in your bag so you’re always prepared, and take advantage of refill stations in cafés and public spaces. If you love your takeaway coffee, investing in a reusable cup means you can enjoy your favourite drinks without contributing to landfill waste. Many cafés even offer discounts for customers who bring their own cup.

Bonus tip: If you prefer sparkling water, consider a soda maker to create fizzy drinks at home without the plastic waste.

2. Swap cling film for wax wraps or reusable containers

Cling film is often used once and then thrown away, contributing to landfill waste. A simple, sustainable alternative are wax wraps, which can be washed and reused multiple times. For an even longer-lasting option, use glass containers or silicone lids to cover food and keep it fresh.

3. Swap one car journey a week for walking or cycling

Reducing car use, even just once a week, is a simple yet effective way to lower your carbon footprint. If you have a short journey that could be walked or cycled instead, give it a try. Not only is this better for the environment, but it also improves health and well-being. Walking or cycling can help you connect with nature, reduce stress, and even save money on fuel.

Bonus tip: If you need extra motivation, try tracking your steps or setting a small goal for the number of car-free journeys you take each month.

4. Swap liquid shampoo for a shampoo bar or refill

Plastic shampoo bottles are a major contributor to bathroom waste. Making the switch to a shampoo bar is a fantastic way to cut down on plastic while also reducing the amount of product you use. The shampoo bars that I stock are made with natural ingredients, making them kinder to your hair and scalp. If you prefer to stick with liquid shampoo, you can bring your own bottles in and refill them at my little eco shop in Taunton, reducing plastic waste without changing your routine.

Bonus tip: Let your shampoo bar dry properly between uses to extend its lifespan. A soap rest is great for this!

5. Swap chemical cleaners for natural alternatives

Many household cleaning products come in plastic bottles and contain harsh chemicals that can harm the environment and also become aerosolised inside our homes and that’s no fun to breathe in. A simple swap is to switch to natural ingredients like white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and green bleach (all of which are available in the shop). These alternatives are just as effective for cleaning but come with the added benefit of reducing plastic waste and exposure to synthetic chemicals.
